See All ReviewsI had a great experience at Best fish and chips, the quality of the food was perfect and very fresh. All the staff were very generous, I am definitely coming here again!
‘Best fish & chips’? NOT!! I ordered medium haddock & chips, & side order of mushy peas. It came in a nice takeout box, bagged with plastic knife fork & serviette. All good so far. Went to sea a front bench to eat, & on opening the box noticed how shrivelled the chips were (scrappy looking l) & on taste, full of fat. I’m not sure if they’re twice fried!?? Anyway, too much fat & little potato. Fish batter & fillet shape looked very suspect - like frozen ones??. One bite & I KNEW this fish had been frozen a long time!! Flesh was hard/chewy & not very white, & batter had a very unusual constant thickness all round the fish & VERY MUCH like what you’d buy frozen in a supermarket. I was convinced that it was a supermarket haddock. Very chewy indeed! Peas were very dry & like a pea puree rather than mushy peas!! I’m from Grimsby (fish town) & know what good fish & chips is & this most definitely was one of the worst I’d had. £16 too….horrendous!! When i passed the shop later, queues had gone, so decided to tell the guy who served me, nice & quietly. He argued the fish wasn’t frozen, but when I said I was from Grimsby & that you can’t tell me, he took it all on the chin! No offer of partial refund or apology! The only apology came from me for HAVING to tell him how bad it was. Frightfully English of me!!
The service was exceptional, they were really friendly and kind - they saw our dog was thirsty and panting, we had water but not a bowl and they gave us one without asking them. The food was ready quickly and it was so so good. I don't usually go for fish and chips because I tend to get disappointed, but this was so light, crispy, tasty and fresh we will keep it pinned on Google maps forever.
